It is one of the four sites in the Chota Char Dham pilgrimage circuit. It is also the origin of the Ganges river and seat of the goddess Ganga. The river is called Bhagirathi at the source and acquires the name Ganga (the Ganges) from Devprayag onwards where it meets the Alaknanda.
Kedarnath – The Abode of Lord Shiva
Kedarnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple can only be reached by foot, and the trek takes around 14 km from the nearest town, Gaurikund. Kedarnath is the most remote of the four Chota Char Dham pilgrimage sites. It is located in the Himalayas, about 3,583 m (11,755 ft) above sea level near the Chorabari Glacier, which is the source of the Mandakini river.
Badrinath – The Abode of Lord Vishnu
Badrinath is located at an altitude of 3,133 meters and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is accessible by road, and it takes around 9-10 hours to reach from Kedarnath. It is located at an elevation of around 3,100 m. Located in the Garhwal Himalayas, on the banks of the Alaknanda river, this sacred town lies between Nar and Narayana mountain ranges. The temple is believed to have been established by sage Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century.
